About Me

Kia ora. I’m Maxwell, aged 35. I was born and raised in Buckinghamshire in the UK and moved over to New Zealand in 2016 after meeting beautiful kiwi girl, who I married in 2022.

In the UK I originally studied music, a huge passion of mine. I am and avid Drum and Bass DJ and producer, regularly releasing and performing my own works.

My journey in healthcare started when I moved to New Zealand. I began working for Nova Trust Alcohol and Drug Clinic as a Support Worker and learned the intense challenges addiction can bring.

Around this time, I was also dealing with significant emotional distress. I found the transition from the UK to NZ very difficult. I still struggle with homesickness, and the pain of living so far away from my family. I found that counselling was my ticket to understanding this pain and finding a way to change my life in ways that brought me confidence.

After my experience at the AoD clinic, and my own counselling journey I wanted to provide this service for others too, and embarked on my counselling training in 2022.

Since then, I have completed my three year Bachelor of Counselling at Laidlaw College, learning to integrate Person Centred and Narrative therapy skills. You can head over to my Info page to find out a little more about how these work.

I am extremely privileged to have been working extensively at the Tane Whai Ora, Canterbury Men’s Centre. It is here that I have come face to face with the massive array of challenges men face in the modern era.

It’s my hope that my life experience and training has taught me how to sit with any story. It’s a honour to sit alongside any person as they journey through their life’s story.

My Practice

From 2022 attended Laidlaw College’s three year intensive Bachelor of Counselling. I learned, and was assessed on, my ethical practice of two modalities - Person Centred Therapy and Narrative Therapy. You can head to my Info page to find out a little more about these modalities.

Also, I am registered under the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) and I am guided by their ethical principals of respect for human dignity, responsible caring, autonomy, and social justice.

Through my training and integrating these ethical guidelines, I’ve learned my therapy style. Creating a therapeutic relationship centred on compassion is a massive focus of my work. I am fascinated to learn what stories you might hold that shape your worldview and your identity. I am also fascinated to think about what wider societal messages you might be affected by, which might be causing you emotional suffering.

It is my aim in a session is to take some of the painful stories you hold and work with you to re-write them into the way you want. I want to help you gain some autonomy in your life again.
